It can be a hard question to answer, for many of us, and can force us to discover things about ourselves that we aren’t entirely comfortable with. Fear can take many forms, from never trusting yourself enough to try for the things you want, to fear of upsetting others in your life and therefore avoiding achieving what you’re capable of. When it comes to creating success however, overcoming fear is the most critical factor. Conquering fear and having faith in yourself is the only way to achieve what you’re ultimately capable of. In this article, we take a look at why and how.
How fear is holding you back

Fear of failure, fear of inadequacy, fear of rejection – the list is endless. Fear is an incredibly powerful demotivator and will stop you from achieving the things you want for yourself. Whether it’s financial independence, a career you enjoy, or simply to be happy, living your life based on fear will rob you of the joy you deserve.
Whether you believe that the universe has the power to bring you the things you desire or not – there is no denying that if you don’t trust in something and have faith, you’re not going to get a lot in return. After all, to win the lottery, you’ve got to buy a ticket. Having faith might mean believing in a higher power or might simply mean believing in your own ability. However you define it, fear is the antithesis of faith.
Being afraid stops us from asking for that promotion we know we deserve. It stops us from saying ‘no’ to the things that rob us of valuable time and energy. It prevents us from having the faith in our abilities and taking the leap to try new things. It teaches us that we can’t trust in ourselves, that things are sure to go wrong, and that we aren’t worthy of success. Living in fear doesn’t serve us, it only detracts.
Having faith in yourself can change your life
Feel the fear and do it anyway.
Living with faith doesn’t mean an absence of fear. In fact, there are very few of us who live without fear, as fear – when it’s managed – can serve as a voice of reasons which tempers our responses. Having faith and courage means recognising the fear, but not being ruled by it. After all, if you’re afraid of losing your job because you’re not showing up to work on time each day, that’s probably valid. But if being afraid means worrying that you won’t succeed at something, and therefore not even trying, that fear isn’t serving you, it’s ruling you.
Having faith in your ability to succeed is the first step in achieving the life you want. That might mean starting out small, learning a new skill, and building up your confidence. Having faith also means knowing that if you fail once, twice, three times or more, you’ll get right back up and try again. Faith is not a lack of failure, but a lack of fear that failure will define you.
Think of every successful person that you admire. The one thing that they all have in common, without a doubt, is faith; faith that they could achieve what they set out to do, and faith that they would be able to try again if they hit a roadblock.
You might even call it positive thinking. There is overwhelming scientific evidence to show that positive thinking and believing in yourself are incredibly effective when it comes to achieving success – however you define success. In fact, countless studies have been carried out on just this subject.
One study conducted in 2009 even found that optimists were more likely to live longer and face fewer health concerns than pessimists, thanks to a decreased risk of heart disease. This information is huge. The power of positive thinking can not only define your success but can keep you healthier and living longer. If that’s not a reason to change the way you look at the world (and at yourself), I don’t know what is.
Cultivating faith for success
Having faith doesn’t come naturally for many of us, whereas being afraid often does. The good news is that it’s possible to cultivate faith and work on it over time. Like any muscle in the body, working on it daily will build and strengthen your faith; if you don’t already possess the faith that you need to succeed, you can create it!
Cultivating faith to achieve success involves making small changes to your daily behaviour, such as countering your negative thoughts with positive ones. Try it the next time your fear speaks to you. When you hear yourself say “this will never work”, counter that thought by telling yourself “I have complete faith that this will work” and see the difference that it makes in your life.
It also means surrounding yourself with people who support and encourage you – people who have faith in you! Creating a community of faithful supporters around you will help to build your faith in yourself and will ultimately lead you to the success you deserve.
